“In dream begins responsibility.”

— W. B. Yeats

“In a room, I think about what I will do, myself, about others,”

– Lynne Tillman, “On the Small Act of Leaving the House”

Strange events that happened in a series may be coincidences, or the beginning of a story. Fiction thrives in the space between the ‘true’ and the ‘false’, between ‘real’ and ‘imaginary'. Like great art, great fiction often destabilizes these binaries through formal innovations, including self-referentiality. In this workshop, we will discuss the duty of dreams and explore how dreams are figurated and used as material in fiction by Delmore Schwartz, Lynne Tillman, and others.

Using dreams as material for stories, we will explore those of Theodor Adorno as well as our own. We will frame and draft a short story that commits us to strange events.
